This type of Roman construction technique is known as “opus reticulatum.” It consists of a masonry structure with approximately square stones arranged in a pyramidal pattern and embedded in lime mortar. The walls built with opus reticulatum are composed of two facings of pyramidal stones made of tuff or volcanic stone, which are easy to carve and are anchored to the internal opus caementicium.
The facing shown here comes from a dwelling in Cardo IV of Herculaneum.
