Description

Virtual reconstruction of two coin pouches.

This type of purse or coin purse (Latin: Crumina or Crumena) in ancient Rome could be of different sizes and made of cloth or leather, although there were also metallic ones (small bracelets used by soldiers to keep their soldiers’ money and thus prevent theft). All the one-piece purses found are made of leather or metal, but there may have been fabric variants, such as those documented in Egypt and Judea, but none have been preserved well enough to be identified as purses.

These pouches were used by both men and women to hold coins or other items such as jewellery. They could be worn around the neck or attached to the waist with a small handle.
