Description

Statuette of the god Jupiter based on the one on display in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and found in the town of Montorio (Verona, Italy); it is dated to the 2nd half of the 2nd century AD. It measures approximately 15-17 cm. The god Jupiter holds the thunderbolt in his left hand and the staff of command (Hasta) in his right, at his feet the eagle, a symbolic element of power.

This piece would have formed part of the Lares gods, Roman divinities of Etruscan origin who were entrusted with the protection of the family home. These gods, together with the Manes and Penates, shared the space of the lararium within the domus, generally located in the atrium of the house.
