Bronze figurine representing the sacrifice of a pig or boar. In the domestic sphere, this type of piece may have formed part of the set of statuettes that would have adorned the Lararium used for the veneration of the gods. This piece is part of the Roman collection in the British Museum.
In ancient Rome, a triple sacrificial rite called suovetaurilia was held, a ceremony consecrated to Mars, to whom three animals were offered in sacrifice, a pig, a sheep and a bull (Latin: sus, ovis, taurus). The animal to be sacrificed wore a band around its torso.
