3D model of a cupboard based on the one located in the abbey of Aubazine (France). It is considered to be the oldest preserved liturgical wardrobe in Europe, dating from the second half of the 12th century. The cabinet seems to have disappeared in the Middle Ages in favour of chests, chests and chests of drawers, except for storing weapons in castles, churches and monasteries. The liturgical cabinet was the piece of furniture built in monasteries, churches or chapels near the altar, where the Blessed Sacrament, vessels or sacred objects, holy oils, relics, etc. were kept. A solid lock was used to close them.
The Aubazine cabinet is constructed with a thick frame, the panels of which are held in place by wrought iron elements. It is made of oak, the almost exclusive use of which in the Middle Ages was one of the dominant features of the period. Its decoration is architecturally inspired: the metal hinges on the leaves are reminiscent of those on the main doors of churches. It bears some resemblance to the shutters of a cupboard built into the north transept wall of the church of Aubazine, which is thought to date from the early 12th century. The twin openings on the sides of the cupboard, the small columns in the corners of the jambs, and the saw-toothed upper edge of the cornice are also architectural motifs that appear in the church. The cornice has traces of red paint and the edges of the locks have traces of gilding, indicating that this cupboard was once polychromed. This is also confirmed by the fact that the two other late 13th-century antique cupboards that have come down to us, preserved in the cathedrals of Notre-Dame de Bayeux and Notre-Dame de Noyon, are painted.
