Description

3D recreation of three Roman-era lanterns found in the rural surroundings of the Serreta Sanctuary, in Alcoi, Alicante. According to G. Lara (2005), these could be type XI A skylights and another type those that are defined as type Dressel 30 and that were mainly produced during the 3rd century AD. These lanterns seem to come from a ritual deposit that is made up of pieces of common and ordinary use, which indicates that there were no sumptuous pieces that refer to devotees with great economic capacity, rather they seem like the offerings of a peasant group, with three types of predominant objects: tableware, lanterns and coins. The presence of light in this type of sanctuaries must have been a very important and crucial element in the ritual activity of La Serreta, which has been attested in the collection of 63 identified and analyzed lights (Lara, 2005) that were used throughout the period of activity of this sanctuary (from Iberian to Roman times) and these lanterns are just an example of this. There are certain hypotheses that explain that some type of pilgrimage could be made to this and other sanctuaries, where the participants congregated at dawn, so they were forced to travel at night or spend the night in the sanctuary itself from the day before, thus, this nocturnal presence can be related to rituals in which these lights would be used and which would later be offered as votive offerings.
