Description

Statuette of a Lar god found in the lararium of the House of the Golden Lovers in Pompeii, now on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

It was found in situ together with other statuettes and arranged in the lararium on two levels. On the upper level or step were the figurines of Mercury, Juno, Jupiter and Minerva. The two Lares were placed, on either side of the group, but on the lower step.

The lararium, or family shrine, provided the place for rituals associated with the veneration and appeasement of the household gods and other events related to the family ancestors. Houses and villas sometimes contained several lararia, located in different areas or rooms of the household.
